Begin Registration: Presence & Protest: The Second Biennial Black Midwest Symposium

The Black Midwest Initiative is committed to consistently asking what it means to be in solidarity with Black folk so often denied access to the spaces in which we create, dream, teach, learn, and labor. Despite our respective positions/careers inside and beyond the university, our liberation will forever be bound up with poor and working-class Black folk. Though we recognize that solidarity is more than simply access, we intentionally strive to eliminate all barriers that further disconnect us from the people and communities we are most committed to. To this end, we are offering a solidarity rate for the second Black Midwest Symposium. We want to make it clear that this is a solidarity rate and not a charity rate. The solidarity we show is not an expression of pity or sympathy. The strictures of charity (e.g., eligibility criteria) ensure that some will avail themselves of opportunities at the expense of others. Solidarity, though, is without such conditions. Rather, the goal is to model a particular ethic of care and mutual aid required to transform social conditions that make accessing these sorts of spaces such a challenge in the first place. We need not even pretend as if members of BMI are not from many of the same communities we seek to prioritize. We know that the places in which we live, labor, and learn remain intent on disconnecting us from the spaces we call home. Still, we recognize the importance of being beholden to one another, as opposed to the systems that we seek to make untenable.

Standard Rate: $25 (increases to $45 after October 7)

The registration fee is meant to help bring the Black Midwest Symposium to fruition while also making it financially accessible to as many people as possible.

Special Donation Rate: $25+
Putting on an event of this magnitude is an absolute labor of love and BMI members have volunteered many hours to make it happen. But it also has significant financial costs and fundraising remains a persistent constraint. If you are able, we invite donations of any amount above the standard rate to help support the costs of attendees who are unable to register at full cost, and to support the ongoing work of BMI.
